If you or a loved one is experiencing mild to severe allergy symptoms, it may be time to test for allergies. Here at Broward ENT, our ear nose and throat team or specialists are qualified to perform several different types of skin tests on-site as well as blood tests if needed. We test for a wide range of allergies from food to environmental in order to be sure of just what is aggravating your immune system.
There are two common ways of testing for allergies: skin and blood testing. Skin tests will either introduce a known allergen by placing an allergen solution on top of abraded skin or by injecting a small quantity of the solution directly under the outer dermis layer. Most ENT doctors prefer skin testing is usually the preferred method as it considered less invasive and results are clear within 20 mins. Blood testing is primarily used for patients who have preexisting skin conditions that make skin testing difficult, are extremely sensitive to the allergen in question, or for babies and very young children who would have difficulty dealing with several skin tests.
Who can be tested for allergies?
Adults and children of any age can be tested for allergies.
Is testing painful?
None of the skin tests are painful, however, if your immune system reacts to one of the allergens, the affected area may feel swollen or itchy following the testing.
How should I prepare for testing?
Before going in for allergy testing, be sure to talk with Dr. Dumornay about all prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking. You may need to stop taking some medicines, such as some tricyclic antidepressants and antihistamines such as cetirizine (Zyrtec), fexofenadine (Allegra), and loratadine (Claritin) before you have an allergy skin test.
